This project developed and tested a GPS/Inertial Navigation Sensor (INS) thatwould detect the three-dimensional altitude of a vehicle accurately enough to support advance vehicle control systems. The work involved development of a theory of construction of gyro-free-INS (GF-INS) and integrated navigating systems. Methods for integrating ordinary gyros with distributed surface-micromachined accelerometers were developed that showed improved precision, range, and bandwidth. An integrated navigation system based on GF-INS and multiple antenna GPS was fabricated and methods for calibrating the system were developed. Following modeling of the proposed methods and approaches, prototypes of the proposed gyro, GF-INS and Int. S. were built and tested. The test results showed the correctness of the proposed algorithms and design methods.
