The Economic Development Administration's (EDA's) University Center Program provides annual funding to higher-education institutions throughout the United States for the support of local and regional economic development. There are currently 69 University Centers located in 45 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The primary purpose of the Program is to improve the economies and economic development capacity of Center service areas, with emphasis on economically distressed communities. A distinguishing characteristic of the Program is that it leverages staff, students, facilities, research capabilities, and other resources of partnering institutions. Centers generally undertake three broad categories of activity: direct technical assistance to clients, applied research, and information dissemination. Technical assistance activities typically have one of two types of clients: economic development organizations or individual businesses.
