The Ground Water Protection Research Foundation (GWPRF) has sponsored this project to model the surface water and ground water interactions associated with coal bed methane (CBM) development in the northern San Juan Basin of Colorado. Ground water production from coalbed aquifers is required for recovering CBM. By pumping water, the pressure in the CBM reservoir is reduced and methane then desorbs from the coal and flows through the natural cleat system to the pumping wells. This project was designed to quantify the maximum surface water depletion that may occur as a result of CBM development in the Fruitland Formation.
