This report summarizes the 8th U.S.- Japan Workshop on Pedestrian and NighttimeSafety. The workshop was hosted by the United States November 15-19, 1999, and was held at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. Focus areas included: general statistics and trends in the U.S. and Japan; pedestrian crashes; TEA-21 and pedestrian planning; disabled and elderly pedestrians; Geographic Information Systems (GIS) application for pedestrian safety; National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) activities; traffic calming in the U.S. and Japan; overview of nighttime crashes in the U.S. and Japan; and Japanese studies on traffic safety countermeasures at nighttime and ultraviolet lighting.
