摘要

The Anabat II is an ultrasonic detector with a computer interface that allowsresearchers to identify free-living bats in the field by their call characteristics. It has become the most widely used bat detector in the U.S. The proper set up and understanding of Anabat II is crucial to the quality of data to be collected. The goal of this project was to determine the limitations of Anabat II. In orderto evaluate the Anabat II equipment, a detailed laboratory study was conducted to determine how the Anabat II receives ultrasonic tones in a controlled environment. It was found that Anabat II did not detect sounds uniformly in space in front of and around the microphone. Therefore, a zone of reception was determined and mapped for two call frequencies within the range of echolocation calls used by bats, 40 kHz and 77 kHz. The zone of reception was found to be influenced by a number of factors, including call intensity, temperature, and humidity. This study shows that researchers and managers who plan to use Anabat II in the field must account for these factors if they are to reach valid conclusions or compare results with other studies or surveys.
