摘要

We conducted experimental pollination and seed germination of Platantheraleucophaea, a north temperate grassland orchid species. Our objectives were to determine how the plant's outcrossing breeding system and different modes of pollination affect the production of viable seed and seed germination, and how seed germination responds to length of stratification period and inoculation by mycorrhizal soil fungi. Outcrossing by hand pollination (which maximizes pollen availability) produced a greater percentage of viable seeds per capsule than natural pollination, and the greatest percentage of viable seeds occurred from outcrossing between populations. Outcrossing also may affect percent germination, as there was a positive correlation between percent seed germination and the percentage of viable seeds. This appears not to have been a seed density effect, as there was no significant correlation between percent germination and the number of viable seeds. The longest (16-weel) moist stratification period resulted in significantly greater percent germination, which was enhanced by inoculation with a. mycorrhizal-forming soil fungus (Ceratorhiza sp) isolated from P. leucophaea.
