摘要

Alaska contains approximately 27 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of known natural gasreserves that can be considered readily available for export. Gas reserves in southern Alaska (Cook Inlet) have been exported in limited quantities for over 30 years. Gas reserves in northern Alaska are stranded by the lack of a means of transportation to market. Across Alaska and the Alaska offshore, unconventional sources for natural gas like hydrates and coal beds are estimated to contain an incredible 170,000 tcf of natural gas in place. Most of this hypothetical natural gas resource is located far offshore in water depths exceeding 300 m and remain inaccessible for the foreseeable future. However, 37 to 44 tcf of gas are estimated to occur in sub-permafrost gas hydrates and might be exploited once a gas transportation infrastructure is installed.
