摘要

Researchers, providers, and policymakers often justify the provision of health211u001einformation to consumers on moral, legal, clinical and economic grounds. However, 211u001ein reality, we know very little about the use and effects of self-care 211u001einformation. This study followed a natural experiment, the Healthwise Communities 211u001eProject (HCP), that started in Boise, ID in 1996. The results show that the 211u001eintervention, which was designed to provide residents with self-care information, 211u001ewas associated with significant increases in the use of medical reference books, 211u001etelephone advice nurses and computers for health information. Nonetheless, 211u001eproviding the community with self-care information did not result in appreciably 211u001ebetter or worse health outcomes for the average resident. Positive gains were 211u001egenerally found in persons with chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes and 211u001edepression). This suggests that future self-care informational interventions 211u001ecould maximize effectiveness by targeting needy or at-risk populations, and then 211u001eprovide information in a medium that is appropriate for the target audience. 211u001eHowever, due to economies of scale and scope, it may be more efficient to provide 211u001einformation to entire communities. Hence, future interventions need to consider 211u001eboth effectiveness and efficiency.
