This report presents data on postsecondary degrees conferred during the 1996-97211u001eacademic year (July 1, 1996 to June 30, 1997) that were collected through the 211u001eIntegrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). IPEDS collects, among 211u001eother data, the number of degrees and awards conferred in each field of study by 211u001eaward level (ranging from postsecondary certificates requiring less than 1 year 211u001eto doctor's and first-professional degrees and certificates), and by 211u001erace/ethnicity and gender of recipient. Discipline divisions and their 211u001especialties (fields of study) are specified in the 'Classification of 211u001eInstructional Programs' (CIP) which was developed by NCES and is the federally 211u001eaccepted standard for collecting, reporting and interpreting education program 211u001edata. This publication uses the 1990 version of CIP for classifying degree 211u001efields.
