The Social Security Administration's (SSA) Supplemental Security Income (SSI)211u001eprogram is the nation's largest cash assistance program for the poor. SSA has 211u001ebeen significantly challenged in its efforts to serve the diverse needs of 211u001erecipients while still protecting the financial health and integrity of the 211u001eprogram. Program abuses and mismanagement, SSI overpayments and SSA's inability 211u001eSSA has taken a number of actions to improve the financial integrity of the 211u001eprogram and revise its traditional approach to program management. SSA decided to 211u001eemphasize and prioritize the expedient processing and payment of claims rather 211u001ethan delay final decisions by requiring more thorough verification steps. It has 211u001ebegun to take more decisive action to protect the financial integrity of the SSI 211u001eprogram.
