This report presents findings from the second nationally representative survey of211u001edistance education undertaken by the National Center for Education Statistics 211u001e(NCES). This survey was conducted in winter 1998-99, and collected information 211u001eabout the 12-month 1997-98 academic year. The first report, Distance Education in 211u001eHigher Education Institutions (U.S. Department of Education 1997) was based on 211u001edata from a 1995 NCES Postsecondary Education Quick Information System (PEQIS) 211u001esurvey of higher education institutions. The Current report updates and expands 211u001eupon the findings from the previous report in several important ways. Perhaps 211u001emost significantly, the current survey expands the universe of institutions from 211u001ewhich it collected data, from higher education institutions to all 2-year and 4-211u001eyear postsecondary institutions. This report also presents new information about 211u001efields of study and instructional level of courses and programs offered through 211u001edistance education, as well as information about how tuition and fees charged for 211u001edistance education courses compare to those charged for on-campus courses. 211u001eFinally, this report also provides trend information for higher education 211u001einstitutions, including changes in the percentage of higher education 211u001einstitutions offering distance education courses, enrollments and course 211u001eofferings, degree and certificate programs.
