摘要

Rotational grazing has been proposed as a best management practice for minimizing runoff in Wisconsin agricultural riparian areas. The influence of this land management practice on grassland birds has not been studied in relation to more traditional agricultural land management systems in Midwestern riparian areas. Previous studies found that rotational pastures are superior to conventional pastures for grassland birds. This study compares the grassland bird community in riparian areas that are rotationally grazed to two other common land use practices along streams in Wisconsin: conventionally (continuously) grazed pastures, and 10 m wide ungrazed filter strips located within row crops (filter strip/crops). I compared overall diversity, as well as the occurrence and abundance of species of management concern between (1) the three land use options to assess their relative importance, and (2) within 10 m (near) and greater than 10 m (far) from the stream to assess local influence of streams on avian use.
