This report updates the ACIPs 1996 recommendations on the prevention of hepatitis211u001eA through immunization ( MMWR 1996;45:(No. RR-15)) and includes (1) new data 211u001eabout the epidemiology of hepatitis A; (2) recent findings about the 211u001eeffectiveness of community-based hepatitis A vaccination programs; and (3) 211u001erecommendations for the routine vaccination of children in states, counties, and 211u001ecommunities with rates that are twice the 1987/1997 national average or greater 211u001eand consideration of routine vaccination of children in states, counties, and 211u001ecommunities with rates exceeding the 1987/1997 national average. Unchanged in 211u001ethis report are previous recommendations regarding the vaccination of persons in 211u001egroups at increased risk for hepatitis A or its adverse consequences and 211u001erecommendations regarding the use of immune globulin for protection against 211u001ehepatitis A.
