This method is for determination of n-hexane extractable material (HEM; oil and211u001egrease) and n-hexane extractable material that is not adsorbed by silica gel (SGT-211u001eHEM; non-polar material) in surface and saline waters and industrial and domestic 211u001eaqueous wastes. Extractable materials that may be determined are relatively non-211u001evolatile hydrocarbons, vegetable oils, animal fats, waxes, soaps, greases, and 211u001erelated materials. This method is capable of measuring HEM and SGT-HEM in the 211u001erange of 5 to 1000 mg/L, and may be extended to higher levels by analysis of a 211u001esmaller sample volume collected separately.
