This report presents a historical account of the development of rear lighting211u001esystems. The account is based partly on a comprehensive review of the available 211u001edocumented sources. Various details of both technical developments and lighting 211u001estandards are covered. Then the rear end crash situation is discussed. It is 211u001enoted that rear end crashes constitute a large and increasing problem in present 211u001eroad traffic. This is followed by an anlaysis of the various functions of rear 211u001esignaling systems and the extent to which the present rear lamps accomplsh those 211u001efunctions. In the final section, the tasks of the driver in car-following 211u001esituations are discussed, followed by a listing of possible changes to rear 211u001esignaling systems that could enhance the safety of road transportation.
