Declines in timber harvests on public lands and new market opportunities have211u001erekindled an interest in nontimber forest products. Such products as edible 211u001emushrooms, medicinal plants, and floral and holiday greens provide alternative 211u001esources of revenue and employment for rural communities. This paper describes and 211u001eanalyzes the contribution of the nontimber forest product industries in the 211u001ePacific Northwest from economic, social, and ecological perspectives. The authors 211u001econclude that promises of replacement for declining timber harvests has been 211u001elargely unfulfilled: the nontimber forest product industries are seasonal, 211u001ecyclical, and competitive, with generally low returns to harvesters. On the other 211u001ehand, harvesting of nontimber forest products provides opportunities to those 211u001ewith the fewest options: recent immigrant groups and residents of economically 211u001edistressed communities. The current economic contribution of non-timber forest 211u001eproducts, however, may be considerably less than their future potential under 211u001emanagement systems that emphasize both timber and nontimber products. Forest 211u001emanagement systems that emphasize a variety of forest products and services are 211u001egenerally higher in diversity, habitat value, recreation value, and aesthetic 211u001eappeal.
