Roadside ditch erosion has been problematic on Virginia highways. VDOT, through211u001ethe Virginia Transportation Research Council, requested that roadside ditch 211u001eerosion be investigated by means of a research project. Virginia Tech was 211u001eselected to conduct this study. In support of this research, design guidance 211u001edocuments were surveyed to learn the current established policy and procedures 211u001efor soil data collection and reporting, and the design practice for hydrologic 211u001eand hydraulic analyses of roadside ditches. Site visits to each of Virginia's 211u001enine construction districts were made to interview district personnel about their 211u001epersonal experience with roadside ditch design, performance, and erosion 211u001efailures. Current ditch design practices in nine other states were investigated 211u001ethrough the collection and survey of state drainage manuals, and phone interviews 211u001ewith DOT personnel. Finally, an extensive review of current literature was 211u001eperformed with the intent of investigating current research on ditch erosion and 211u001eerosion control.
