Balcony House is one of five cliff dwellings open to the public in Mesa VerdeNational Park, Colorado. A visit to Balcony House is a unique experience. Even though the structure is relatively small, its dramatic setting, its defensive characteristics, and its challenging 30 ft. wooden entrance ladder combine to make the site unforgettable. Balcony House was excavated and stabilized in 1910 by Jesse L. Nusbaum. Unfortunately no report was ever published on this work. This has made interpretation and stabilization of the site difficult, often a matter of conjecture. What was the function of a particular room. Was certain mortar original or was it part of early stabilization. It was clear that the history of Balcony House had to be investigated in the archive and no in the dirt.
