The report presents the results of the statistical analysis of multi-element data211u001ecollected during a pilot study that preceded the Comprehensive Abatement 211u001ePerformance (CAP) Study. The goal of the CAP Study was to assess the long-term 211u001eefficacy of lead-based paint abatement. For the multi-element analysis, 211u001econcentrations of lead, as well as of aluminum, barium, cadmium, calcium, 211u001echromium, magnesium, nickel, potassium, titanium, and zinc in dust and soil 211u001esamples were measured. Concentrations of barium, cadmium, chromium, titanium, and 211u001ezinc were measured because these elements were regarded as possible constituents 211u001eof paint. Concentrations of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, nickel, and potassium 211u001ewere measured because these elements were regarded as likely to be found in soil. 211u001eThe multi-element analysis was undertaken to determine whether relationships 211u001eamong these elements could provide a 'tracer' for identifying the sources and 211u001epathways of lead in households. Pilot study data were used to (1) characterize 211u001ethe concentrations of lead, aluminum, barium, cadmium, calcium, chromium, 211u001emagnesium, nickel, potassium, titanium, and zinc samples in household dust and 211u001esoil; (2) measure the differences in these concentrations associated with 211u001erenovation and lead-based paint abatement; and (3) investigate the relationship 211u001eamong the elements by sample type (i.e., samples taken from different locations).
