Brittle cast aluminum transformer bases used as breakaway supports for luninairepoles to protect occupants during vehicular collisions, must also resist moments caused by lateral wind loads. To study its moment capacity, a three dimensional finite element model using CSA/NASTRAN was developed for analyzing both TBI-17 and TB3-17 t-base models. To validate the finite element results, full scale tests were conducted. The behavior of the t-base/light pole system is a complex interaction which is affected by properties of the t-base, base plate thickness, diameters of the bolt circles at the top and bottom of the t-base. Critical loading orientations of the t-base were investigated and determined.
