摘要

Market and policy changes are encouraging competition among hospitals based on211u001eprice. Little is known about how price competition effects the quality of medical 211u001ecare. Changes in the mortality rate and in rates for cardiac catheterization, 211u001ecoronary angioplasty, and coronary artery bypass graft surgery were measured for 211u001epatients with acute myocardial infections admitted to all New Jersey hospitals 211u001eduring the 3 years before and the 2 years after a change in state law that 211u001eabolished a hospital rate-setting program and replaced it with a program that 211u001eencouraged hospital price competition. We compare these changes with those for 211u001esimilar patients in New York State.
