摘要

The report presents an overview of technological developments in traffic and transport that may be expected to occur in the next ten to twenty years. Including their relevance to rural areas. The dominant role of private cars in rural areas will even increase during the next few decades. As a result of innovations in infrastructure, e.g. tunnels and quiet asphalt, (car) traffic in rural areas will take up less land and will cause fewer problems. Problems will also be reduced by achieving reductions in vehicle noise and emissions. Intelligent transport systems will increase the capacity of available infrastructure while passengers will be better informed about travel possibilities. Opportunities provided by those developments for rural areas may be found mainly in keeping rural areas open and quiet, thus enhancing the main qualities of rural areas. Large infrastructure projects in the northern parts of the Netherlands are not very likely to result in strong economic growth. Rather, chances are that the effects of road congestion in the western and central parts of the Netherlands will be that industrial and transport and activities are moved to the northern parts of the country.
