In the last decade, Indian gaming has brown into a multibillion-dollar business.At the end of fiscal year 1997, 275 Indian gaming operations existed in 28 states. These operations included casino gaming, which ranged from multimillion-dollar casinos, to a unit with a few slot machines, to bingo. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988, among other things, established a statutory basins for the operation of gaming by Indian tribes as a means to promote tribal economic development, shield it from organized crime, and ensure that gaming is conducted fairly and honestly by both the operators and players. To this end, the act established the National Indian Gaming Commission to verse Indian gaming and differentiated the roles ofthe Commission, the states, and the tribes. The Commissions is responsible for ensuring that tribal gaming is conducted in compliance with the act and the Comission regulations.
