Oxygen-enhanced multiple-hearth sludge incineration was the focus of a five-month211u001ejoint study by Praxair and the New York State Energy Research and Development 211u001eAuthority. Testing and demonstration were conducted in Rochester NY, at Monroe 211u001eCounty's Frank E. Van lare Sewage Treatment Plant. A simple retrofit of high-211u001emomentum oxygen lances created a convenction hearth in which convective heat and 211u001emass transfer with the drying sludge were greatly enhanced, while hearth 211u001etemperaures were moderated by the wet sludge to prevent overheating.
