The cold forgeability was investigated for four ball bearing steels with similar211u001echemical analysis and three different austenitic stainless steels, 2333, 302 HQ 211u001eand 2570. The cold forgeability was tested with a method developed at the Swedish 211u001eInstitute for Metals Research. The test method is able to classify and rank 211u001ematerials in order of their crack initiation and propagation properties. Of the 211u001ethree investigated austenitic stainless steels one was austenitic unstable, 2333, 211u001eand two were austenitic stable, 302 HQ and 2570. The austenitic stainless steels 211u001ewere all pre-reduced before testing. The unstable austenitic stainless steel was 211u001epre-reduced to three levels 10%, 20% and 30%. The four balls bearing steel is 211u001epart of a larger reduced factorial design plan, therefore, the chemical analysis 211u001eis altered within the specified limits of the alloy. The result of the 211u001einvestigation displays that the stable austenitic stainless steels in general has 211u001ebetter resistance to crack initiation and propagation than the unstable 211u001eaustenitic stainless steel.
