The authors compared numbers of breeding pairs, molt chronology, brood211u001eobservations, and the age and sex composition to determine whether harlequin duck 211u001e(Histrionicus histrionicus) populations in oiled areas of western Prince William 211u001eSound (WPWS) and unoiled areas of eastern Prince William Sound (EPWS), Alaska 211u001eexhibited similar demographic characteristics. The number and composition of 211u001eharlequin ducks in PWS varied among survey periods because of seasonal movements 211u001eby ducks into and out of the study area. The authors did not detect any major 211u001edifference in population structure between EPWS and WPWS. This suggests similar 211u001ebreeding propensity, recruitment, breeding success, and survival rates. The 211u001eauthors detected a decrease in the number of harlequin ducks in WPWS, while no 211u001esignificant change was observed for EPWS. Therefore, the authors believe the 211u001eharlequin duck population in oiled areas of WPWS has the potential to recover 211u001efrom the effects of the EVOS, but is still declining.
