The U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Technology Center (FETC) sponsors211u001eresearch and development applied to energy systems that achieve high efficiency, 211u001eeconomy, and environmental performance while using domestic fossil fuel supplies. 211u001eFuel cell systems are among the most promising electric power generation 211u001etechnologies that FETC is currently developing. Arthur D. Little (1) predicted 211u001ethat office buildings will be the second largest sector in the commercial 211u001ebuilding market for fuel cell cogeneration. The main objective of this study was 211u001eto explore this early market opportunity for fuel cell systems in large office 211u001ebuildings and to determine the conditions under which they might compete with the 211u001ealternative of purchased power. To illustrate clearly the design, evaluation and 211u001eperformance of a fuel cell cogeneration sys-tem, a specific application, the CNG 211u001eTower was chosen as an example. Located in downtown Pittsburgh, the modern, 32-211u001estory office building has a total floor area of 623,000 square feet, the seventh 211u001elargest in the city. Typical floor layouts are shown in the report. On average, 211u001ethere are around 3,000 people in the CNG Tower during office hours.
