In this study of the effectiveness and outcomes of Hysterectomy 1,299 women wereenrolled. Participants were interviewed prior to hysterectomy and at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after. For most of the women in this study hysterectomy provided substantial relief of symptoms, as well as improvement in quality of life, psychological functioning and sexual functioning. In addition, most of the patents were pleased with the outcomes and remained pleased throughout the two years of follow-up. However, 10.7% of the patients experienced moderatley serious complications and 8 women (0.6%) experienced serious complications. Complications substantially increased length of stay in the hosptial and cost of hyterectomy. Women who had Vaginal or laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy experienced less post-operative pain and activity limitation than women having abdominal hysterectomy and went back to work sooner. Socioeconomic factors, particularly patient education, income and occupation, were related to the time from initial physician consultation to hysterectomy. Lower socioeconomic women had hysterectomy faster than upper socioeconomic women.
