Open Pit Optimization Calculating the Optimum Pit Limits

Pit optimization is a tool to guide pit planning. They only give a raw model,actualy many of them give only a list of blocks, which parts can be mined profitably. The pit created by the optimizer does not contain haul roads, safety berms etc. These and many other design parameters must be taken into account in final planning of the pit. The pit optimizing methods can be divided into six groups by the algorithms used as follows: (1) Heuristic technques (coning); (2) Dynamic programming (Lerchs-Grossmann 2D); Linear programming; Network flow theory; Graph theory (Lerchns-Grossmann 3D, Zhao-Kim 3D); and New techniques (genetic algorithms etc.). The most used techniques are coning, as it is easily computerized and understood, and the Lerchs-Grossmann 3D algorithm, as it gives correct results. In this report, pit optimization is outlined to contain only the calculation of the limits of an ultimate pit.
