A computational method to determine the effects of air cushions on the behavior211u001eof large floating structures in waves is described. The method is based on linear 211u001ethree-dimensional potential theory using linearized adiabatic law for the air 211u001epressures in the cushions. The water surfaces within the air cushions and the 211u001emean wetted surface of the structure are described by panel distributions 211u001erepresenting oscillating sources. Two approaches are described for solving the 211u001emotions of the structure the first being a direct method which does not give 211u001einsight in the effects of air cushions on quantities such as added mass, damping 211u001eand wave forces on the structure. The second method also solves for these 211u001equantities. Examples are given of the influence of a single air cushion under a 211u001esimplified jack-up platform in the wet tow mode and on the effect of multiple, 211u001enon-connected air cushions under a large barge-shaped vessel.
