Appendage Resistance of a Sailing Yacht Hull. The Chesapeake Sailing Yacht211 Symposium (13th). Held in Annapolis, Maryland on January 25, 1997
Since the introduction of the resistance calculation for yachts based on the211u001eresults of the original Delft Systematic Yacht Hull Series (DSYHS), as presented 211u001eby Gerritsma et.al in 1979, 1985 and 1992, considerable changes have taken place 211u001ein the design of both the shape and size of the appendages, i.e. keel and rudder. 211u001eFor the sake of consistency the original DSYHS was tested with one and the same 211u001eset of appendages for all models, necessary for the heeled and yawed tests, which 211u001ein design reflected the standards of the mid seventies for a hull like the Parent 211u001eModel No. 1. This study tries to shed some light on the subject by reporting on a 211u001enumber of model experiments and calculations carried out to define the resistance 211u001eof four different appendages under two different hulls.
