The report contains a review of available task analytic data and protocols211u001epertinent to heavy vehicle operation and determination of the availability and 211u001erelevance of such data to heavy vehicle driver workload assessment. Additionally, 211u001ea preliminary consideration of development of safety-relevant criteria was 211u001epursued, and relevance of a review of the relationship between risk-taking 211u001ebehavior and workload was examined. Task analysis data included American, 211u001eCanadian, and European sources which varied substantially in format and content, 211u001eand were largely oriented to support training and certification. A variety of 211u001eprotocols including activity analysis, interviews and commentary, driving or 211u001eprotocol analysis, critical incident technique, subjective workload ratings, 211u001evisual allocation measures, on-the-road driver-vehicle performance monitoring, 211u001esafety criticality ratings, and rankings were identified. No fully developed 211u001emethodologies or criteria were found by which to predict accident rates based on 211u001eworkload level. but actuarial, visual allocation of resources, and lanekeeping 211u001eapproaches were presented.
