There is a need to identify suitable longitudinal joint construction techniques211u001efor multilane hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements, which can minimize or eliminate 211u001ecracking at the joint and/or ravening adjacent to the joint. It is believed that 211u001ethe longitudinal cracks primarily result from the density gradient which is 211u001eusually encountered across the joint. This density gradient can be attributed to 211u001ethe low density at the unconfined edge when the first lane is paved, and a 211u001erelatively high density at the confined edge when the adjacent lane is paved. 211u001eSeven different longitudinal joint construction techniques were used on 211u001eInterstate 25 in Colorado in 1994.
