Binary images are produced in large amounts in modern digital society, eitherdirectly or derived from grey value or color images. In case one disposes of a large collection of images representing the same object or scene, one would like to talk about a 'typical' image, or more generally view the images as realizations of a 'random' image. A way to accomplish this is to randomize the construction of the corresponding quadtree. A natural manner to randomly label a tree is by tree-indexed Markov chains whose states are labels or colors. This is described in Section 2. In Section 3, we consider the estimation of the parameters of tree-indexed Markov chain from data. In Section 4, we apply this to a data set consisting of 147 CT-scans of transaxial lung-slices.
