To aid the blast furnace operators to control the furnace new control sensors,mathematical models and the working standards have been developed. However metallurgical processes are difficult to model mathematically, they have multiple performance functions and there are elements in metallurgical processes that are difficult to represent numerically (Saito, 1991). Also the conditions in metallurgical processes change frequency and sometimes there are no suitable sensors for on-line and direct measurements (Saito, 1991). The processes of this kind have mainly been operated by using the knowledge and the empirical rules of the plant personnel. The artificial intelligence methods like expert systems, fuzzy logic and neural networks utilize effectively the empirical knowledge of the plant personnel. Therefore the artificial intelligence has been an effective tool when the systems that are supporting the process control of the blast furnace have been developed.
