An in-vehicle warning signal display concept was developed and tested using thedesign principle that moving or flickering objects are more likely to be noticed. By refining this insight with contemporary knowledge of the visual system, the IDEA project developed a system in which warning signals are notices more rapidly and identified more easily. The signals are arranged around a simple line drawing of a vehicle and, when actuated, are set in 'apparent motion' by alternately illuminating adjacent images so that the signals oscillate. Tests show that these signals improve driver time to react and warning signal detectability when compared with static signals. The testing system developed for this IDEA project has potential for wide application and can be used for comparing performance and effectiveness of new ITS warning signals on a reference base.
