The general question of this thesis is whether, and if so, how colour affects theperceived shape of objects. To answer this question experimental perception research was done. The research concerns colour-shape interaction. The research was conducted for the benefit of industrial design engineering. The question can be introduced as follows. Generally, design engineers create products: three-dimensional objects that are meant to be used by people. For the design of the product's shape it is important to know the effect of colour on shape. The research is based on a perception theory developed by James J. Gibson, the 'theory of direct perception'. The theory of direct perception has proven to be a fruitful approach to the study of human-product interaction for the benefit of product design. The phenomenon of colour is explained comprehensively to elucidate the subject of research: colour shape interaction. Previous research on the expressivity of colour focused on, among other aspects, perceived size and distance effects of colour on flat surfaces, such as cards or patches of light on a monitor. The results of this research are of limited importance for an applied discipline such as industrial design engineering: the size and distance effects found in the research with two-dimensional stimuli are not necessarily valid for three-dimensional stimuli; in previous research subjects did not act with the stimuli. In the research of this thesis, action with objects (Chapter 2) and the perceived shape of three-dimensional objects (Chapter 3 to 5) are both taken into account to study colour shape interaction.
