We develop a numerical model of an Er-doped optical fiber laser with a fiberBragg grating as one of the cavity mirrors. This model is used to simulate the response to of the system to a harmonic Bragg wavelength change, and also to optimize an experimental laser. The simulations indicate that we should be able to measure strains in the range 50-500 micrometer strain at frequencies of 1-10kHz. The response to small values of strain is not good, except for very low frequencies. We have built and tested a strain sensing Bragg grating fiber laser. The wavelength response to strain was as expected, but the WDM used in the demodulation was too polarization sensitive to be a practical device for this purpose. We tried to do measurements of dynamic strain, but these were not successful.
