摘要

Disasters with roro-vessels in the past have proven the enourmous vulnerabilityof the roro design if there is an opening in the hull. Throught the opening sea water can enter the vehicle deck, which may lead to a very quick capsize. Design improvements to prevent disasters in the future will often have financial consequences for the ship owner, who has to operate in a very competitive market. To evaluate the cost effectiveness of safety measurements it is necessary to be able to predict the conditions for which a roro-vessel will capsize. This can be investigated with model experiments and is carried out in the first part of this thesis. Another approach can be the numerical simulation of forces and motions which can lead to capsize of the vessel. Therefore, the objective of this second part of this thesis is to investigate the possibility to assess the conditions for which a roro-vessel will capsize with numerical simulation.
