In October, recovering milk production, slowing sales, and a premature end toseasonal stock declines caused prices of milk and cheese to start falling from record summer levels. However, the size of the price drops soon exceeded what could be easily explained by the small, gradual causes. Late 1996 dairy product markets remained quite unsettled, but some modest price recovery is expected by the winter of 1997.
