摘要

The pre-base history of Randolph Air Force Base describes the use of the sitefrom the seventeenth century to 1928. Influenced by the development of the city of San Antonio, approximately 18 miles to the southewest, the land was crossed by Spanish explorers, followed by herders who supplied the Spanish missions, by travelers along the camino real, by speculators in Mexican land grants, and, subsequently, Texas land claims. Intense use occurred around the middle of the nineteenth century, first by ranchers, and, finally, by many German immigrant farmers who built homes and grew crops between the 1860s and 1928. Physical evidence of these uses has been all but obliterated by clearing and leveling the land and constructing the base.
