Four kinds of Fe-Mn-Si master alloy powders were made by chill casting andmilling. The characteristics of the powders such as chemical analysis, particle shape, particle size distribution, phase constituent, melting point and microstructure were determined. Investigation of Si and Mn composition homogeneity and microstructure observation of ingots before milling were also made. Calculation of phase equilibria of ternary Fe-Si-Mn alloy at different temperatures were performed. The results show that the ternary Fe-Mn-Si alloys studied in present paper consist of (Fe,Mn)3Si, (Fe,Mn)5Si and (Fe,Mn)9Si2 phases, and the solidus and liquidus temperatures are between 1083 degrees C and 1241 degrees C. The characteristics of Fe-Mn-Si powders vary with Si and Mn compositions, and Si composition affects characteristics more than Mn composition. Higher silicon alloys result in easier crushing and milling compared with lower silicon alloys. The finest powders were obtained with a mean particle size of 12 micrometers after 10 min milling, and 5 micrometers after 90 min milling.
