摘要

The authors investigated least tern (Sterna antillarum athalassos) foragingbehavior on the Lower Mississippi River in habitats surrounding sand island nesting colonies during the nesting seasons of 1993-95. We observed strong yearly difference in habitat use and foraging behavior. Deep-water habitats were used predominately in 1993, while shallow habitats were more heavily used in 1994 and both habitats were used almost equally in 1995. We observed the highest capture rates, foraging efficiencies, activity rates and dive rates during 1995, followed by 1994 with the lowest in 1993. Stage of reproduction was an important source of variation to some goraging variables in some years, and the typical pattern suggest that foraging rates decline during incubation. Our study suggests that the predator-prey relationship between least terns and small riverine fish is complex and not easily understood. The large amount of variation in tern foraging behavior between and among years is most likely closely related to hydrologic cycles on the river. Hydrology was highly variable during the course of this study. Other factors that may be complicating our understanding of this system include density-dependent effects of terns on their prey base and the effects of predator avoidance responses of small fish in some habitats.
