A detailed literature study on the concepts of wavelet theory and its applicationto transient detection and characterization was performed. This thesis is part of a preliminary study for a technical feasibility project, where a recently developed fiber optic strain sensor system is used for structural surveillance of naval vessels. The main work was focused on understanding and using wavelet theory for practical implementation for structural monitoring. A new translation invariant wavelet representation for transient detection purposes is presented. Some examples of applied theory on real data are given. The new detection method, which is based on the matched filter technique, indicate improved computational efficiency compared to other known techniques.
