Almost $2 trillion is spent in retail stores every year, and a large portion of211u001ethose sales is rung up with electronic checkout scanners. Checkout scanners have 211u001ebeen in use for over 20 years, but there are ongoing concerns about their 211u001eaccuracy. These concerns led to this study of scanner practices across the 211u001ecountry. The staff of the Federal Trade Commission, Technology Services of the 211u001eNational Institute of Standards and Technology, the States of Florida, Michigan, 211u001eMissouri, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 211u001eparticipated in this study.
