Educational aspirations of the 1980 sophomores in 1982 (when most of them were high school seniors) were related to their socioeconomic status (SES) Those in the lowest quartile were far more likely to expect no postsecondary education than were those in the middle two and highest quartiles. Students in the highest quartile were much more likely than the other groups to expect college or graduate school. The 1980 sophomores high school grades were positively associated with their SES: as grades increased, so too did sophomores average SES. Test scores were positively associated with 1980 family income, high school grades, and parents educational attainment.
