The report outlines a survey of 125 engineering schools and 625 accreditedundergraduate programs, analyzing safety/health (S/H) education both at the school and program levels, including instructional approaches and data on required and elective courses that carry S/H content. A course content analysis shows the proportion of time devoted to six S/H fields and differences in S/H instructional coverage. Self-reported data in 12 engineering disciplines show certain changes between 1986 and 1992 in new S/H education requirements and additions to labortory and design courses. Perceptions are described of engineering faculty regarding S/H accreditation criteria and technical society recommendations as influences of change. Reading materials are discussed and problems are identified in the amount and type of instructional material written for undergraduates. Faculty have provided information on the kinds of instructional materials they would find most useful to improve courses. Comparative ratings are provided for 12 engineering disciplines.
