This research focuses on the problem of short-term forecasting of convective storms (thunderstorms) and their precipitation, and on the observation of storm behavior to obtain data for the stochastic modeling of convective precipitation. Contributions of this research to the field of precipitation and hydrological forecasting include development of the following: an automated thunderstorm identification and tracking method which handles merging and splitting situations effectively; an automated forecast method for storm position with better accuracy than human-generated forecasts; an automated precipitation forecast method with better accuracy than the 'bench-mark' persistence forecast; a method to characterize convective storms in a manner suitable for the statistical analysis and modeling of convective precipitation.
