摘要

This translation summarizes the history of Japan's Next Generation IndustrialFoundation Technology Research and Development System. Unlike new technologies of past decades, the 'new' technologies of the Next Generation System fall into one of three categories: information-related, new materials-related, or biotechnology-related. Published on the 10th anniversary of the Next Generation System, this report discusses the progress and changes during the past 10 years, the shift in R&D and results. The ripple effects and industrial foundation technology, as well as future prospects, are also discussed.
