The Gas Research Institute (GRI) is conducting a 36-month research program atSouthwest Research Institute (SwRI). The purpose of the program is to develop more cost-effective and reliable repair technologies, and to provide guidelines that can be used to prevent rupture of gas transports systems. The work will specifically: (1) provide prototype repair materials, devices and procedures for polyethylene (PE) pipes; (2) develop and validate design and maintenance procedures that will insure that a long-running rapid crack propagation event is not possible, and; (3) investigate the Microwave Fusion Joining System, a basic development of the 3M Company and incorporate its features into the computer model of a similar (EF) system. The work will provide useful deliverables regarding piping system design, installation, maintenance and inspection procedures while steadily progressing toward the ultimate goal of providing advanced alternate pipe repair procedures.
